Listen to this podcast of June 19, 2016 Lisa Benson Show on the Orlando Massacre. It is one of the most important broadcasts we have done on Islamic terror attacks in America. Both Dr. Sebastian Gorka and Dr. Michael Welner understand what triggered Omar Mateen’s mass killing of 49, with 53 wounded at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Dr. Gorka is a FoxNews counterterrorism analyst and the Major General Matthew C. Horner Distinguished Chair of Military Theory at the Marine Corps University and the Chairman of Threat Knowledge Group and author of the best selling Defeating Jihad; a winnable war. Dr. Welner is a noted forensic psychiatrist, Chairman of the Manhattan –based Forensic Panel who has provided expert witness for the prosecution in a number of high profile, kidnapping, mass killing and terrorist cases and has appeared on both ABC and CNN.
Orlando Pulse Nightclub Victims
In the wake of the Orlando Massacre by Omar Mateen, the country is desperately seeking answers on what policies and strategies that might be adopted to prevent another ideologically driven mass killing in an enclosed space using military grade weapons against soft targets and having accomplices. A mass killing by self motivated members of a virtual Islamic supremacist global network. San Bernardino and Orlando attacks demonstrate these were both ideologically driven.
Both Gorka and Welner reject the deranged “lone wolf” assessments of the Administration and self styled counterterrorism experts. They also blame the Administration for rejecting the Islamic supremacist doctrine behind this homicidal Jihad committed during the month long Muslim observances of Ramadan. Effectively, Gorka and Welner are like the boy in the Hans Christian Andersen fable that points out the obvious.
President Obama and the mainstream media deny the homicidal Jihad doctrine of Salafist Islam espoused by the Islamic State to whom these attackers pledge fealty for fear of offending domestic and international Muslim communities. Communities, whose leaders are complicit in supporting Islamic supremacism, whether Sunni or Shia. Instead the Administration and the media blame such terrorist attacks on alleged deranged individuals using guns, expressing hate of minority groups without naming what the doctrinal motivation is behind them.
Dr. Sebastian Gorka
Dr. Gorka drew attention to the emerging facts in the Orlando Massacre. The perpetrator Omar Mateen with his wife Noor Salman had visited a gun shop seeking military grade body armor and bulk ammunition. The owner of the gun shop suspicions were raised when he overheard Mateen speaking on a cell phone with a third party in a foreign language. The gun shop owner reported what occurred to federal authorities who didn’t respond and connect the dots with previous investigations by the FBI of Mateen. His actions exemplified the importance of the “see something say something” counterterrorism doctrine practiced but abandoned because of political correctness by the NYPD after 9/11. Moreover, Mateen’s cell phone records show that he spoke with his wife during the attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando and someone else.
Gorka tells us that the failure of the FBI to prevent the Orlando Massacre may be traceable to the Civil Rights Division of Department of Justice. That overarching control by the DOJ was evident the day following the broadcast, when the FBI initially released redacted transcripts eliminating references to the Islamic State, only to reverse under withering criticism by Congressional Republicans, especially House Speaker Paul Ryan. USA Today in late afternoon on June 20th reported:
In the midst of a tense standoff with police, Orlando nightclub gunman Omar Mateen calmly claimed credit for the massacre and identified himself as an “Islamic soldier” while calling on U.S. authorities to stop the bombing in Iraq and Syria, according to partial transcripts of the attacker’s telephone contacts with dispatchers and crisis negotiators released on Monday.
“Praise be to God, and prayers as well as peace be upon the prophet of God,” Mateen told a 911 dispatcher in Arabic just after 2:30 a.m., June 12. “I am in Orlando, and I did the shootings.”
Mateen provided his full name during the 50-second call and then went on to pledge allegiance to the Islamic State and its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Justice Department officials initially redacted the reference to the terror group and its leader when the exchange was released Monday but abruptly changed course following a wave of criticism from Republican leaders.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., called the initial decision to edit the transcript “preposterous.”
“We know the shooter was a radical Islamist extremist inspired by ISIS,” Ryan said. “We also know he intentionally targeted the LGBT community. The administration should release the full, un-redacted transcript so the public is clear-eyed about who did this, and why.”
Later, in a joint statement, Justice and FBI officials said they relented because the redactions had “caused unnecessary distraction” from the work of law enforcement authorities.
“We also did not want to provide the killer or terrorist organizations with a publicity platform for hateful propaganda,” according to the statement.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said all decisions about the release of the transcript were made by the Justice Department. He declined to weigh in on the controversy. “The position of the White House is that we shouldn’t interfere with a pending law enforcement investigation,” he said.
Further those recent statements by CIA director Brennan in testimony before the US Senate Intelligence Committee contradict President Obama’s foreign and domestic counter terrorism strategies contending with Jihadists. Gorka noted the virtual 180 degree turn away from Brennan’s previous stand that so-called upstream factors like poverty and the lack of education were the source of Islamic attacks against the West and here in America. He considers CIA Director Brennan’s testimony before the US Senate Committee an absolute reversal of Administration policy.
Brennan in his testimony drew attention to the seeming inability to crush the self-declared Caliphate of the Islamic State, despite its shrinking footprint in both Syria and Iraq. Brennan basically said that the attraction of the pure form of Salafist Islam propounded by the Caliph al-Baghdadi has metastized into virtual provinces across the Ummah. Everywhere, Daesh, the Islamic State in Arabic, is poised to attack us in the West, whether Paris, London, San Bernardino and now Orlando. Orlando is the largest mass killing in the US by an Islamic supremacist since 9/11. Gorka contends that Brennan has opened up a crack in the Administration that seriously brings into question its meme of countering violent Islamic extremism, without naming it.
Gorka rejects the model of Britain’s MI-5 as a possible solution to the FBI’s failure to nab homicidal jihadists like Omar Mateen. He believes the country would reject alleged intrusion into domestic private affairs. Gorka contends that the dozens of Joint Terrorism Task Forces around the country are better suited to this task.
Israel’s Shin Bet or General Security Service, modeled on MI-5 has crushed Islamic terrorist plots in the West Bank and Israel. Just think of the “Green Prince”, Musab Youssef, the son of a Hamas founder who became a double agent for Shin Bet and thwarted the evil intents of his father and other Muslim Supremacists.
Dr. Gorka in his book Defeating Jihad: the winnable war, admires the domestic counterterrorism intelligence and community policing model that the NYPD perfected under former New York Mayors Giuliani and Bloomberg directed by former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. In the wake of 9/11, the NYPD created an international network of liaison offices in key foreign locations, including Israel, and developed a program monitoring Muslim communities in New York. It also developed an active situational awareness, “see something, say something” in ads in the city’s public mass transportation system. The success of the NYPD counterterrorism model was it foiled dozens of terrorist plots after 9/11. The NYPD did not depend on both the CIA and FBI for the requisite information to protect the City’s 9 million residents. That protective shield is now gone given the legal settlements with Muslim advocacy groups and the requests of current New York Mayor di Blasio.
When asked a question about what he would suggest to defeat jihad, Gorka responded:
- Remove the politically correct fiction masking the real doctrine of jihad;
- Empower the people most at risk among American allies in the Middle East: the Jordanians, Egyptians and other Sunni allies; and
- As we did during the Cold War delegitimize and bankrupt Jihad doctrine.
Dr. Michael Welner
Source: ABC Good Morning America
Dr. Welner informed our listeners about the basic differences between ‘vanity’ versus ‘ideologically driven’ mass killings of strangers. At the core of both events is they both exhibit forethought, preparation and planning to carry out. The former are meant to focus attention on the creation of a murderous spectacle to achieve notoriety. The Orlando Massacre fits the second category as the late Omar Mateen was an Islamic supremacist; moreover he had an accomplice. His wife Noor Salman, an American daughter of Palestinian émigrés, was present when he sought to purchase body armor and bulk quantities of ammunition. She allegedly assisted him in casing the Pulse night club and Disney properties in Orlando. Further, as we have subsequently learned, she was in communications with him during the attack, although it is alleged that she tried to dissuade her husband from committing his homicidal Jihad. We now learn that Ms. Salman may have had either fled or more likely been put into protective custody. The grand jury that has been convened by federal prosecutors may bring multiple charges against her as a co-conspirator.
The media has speculated that Mateen may have exhibited conflicting sexual identities with allegations of visiting gay dating websites, perhaps visiting the Pulse nightclub and others in his home vicinity. Mateen’s first wife who fled after four months of marriage because of his violent and abuse behavior also contended that he may have been homophobic because of his conflicting sexual identity. Dr. Welner contends that Mateen came from an Afghanistan Muslim background fraught with male sexual identity conflicts. He pointed out that committing murderous jihad during Ramadan is one means of obtaining absolute forgiveness.
Welner characterized the spectacle aspect of such mass killings arising from media attention to such events that produce an overwhelming body count. Hence in the case of the Pulse nightclub it was a packed confined space enabling Mateen to shoot over 100 people leaving them few means of escape. That would not have been the case in any Disney property he and his wife were casing in Orlando as they were open, and, as Welner stressed, there may have been women in Hijabs and children present. Welner drew the analogy between San Bernardino and Orlando venues. Both were ideologically motivated and occurred in known enclosed spaces with soft targets creating a spectacle mass killing.
Mateen’s mass killing in Orlando was a classic terrorist attack in that impacts people to change their behavior. In this case the attack was directed at making people submissive to bend their will to meet Salafist Islam doctrine.
Welner noted the failure of the DHS and FBI in the Orlando massacre. The owner of the gun shop where Mateem was shopping for body armor and mass ammunition did something and contacted the FBI. Yet, the FBI didn’t connect the dots from the previous investigations. It was the classic example of the NYPD ‘see something, say something ‘advertising campaign. He believes that the DHS and the FBI will be on the defensive to explain why Mateen slipped through the cracks in the counterterrorism system and committed his murderous Ramadan Jihad.
The remarks of both Drs. Gorka and Welner need widespread sharing in the social and mainstream media to overcome the dangerously misleading counterterrorism doctrine of the President, contradicted by CIA director Brennan during Senate Intelligence Committee hearings.
